Statement
Our mission is to preserve, revive and promote Kathak as a living art form in Pakistan. We uphold the classical integrity of the form, train a new generation of dancers with the rigour it demands, and carry it beyond elite spaces so that it belongs to everyone.
Our
Philosophy
We believe art belongs to everyone. Talent is not determined by income, geography or background, so we offer scholarships that open classical training to students who could not otherwise reach it.
We take our performances beyond the major cities, to small towns, villages and university campuses, because audiences everywhere deserve to encounter beauty, storytelling and shared cultural experience.
Our
Founder
Mohsin Babar is an internationally acclaimed choreographer, dancer and performing artist, revered for his expertise in Kathak, the classical dance form of South Asia. His artistry extends to Pakistani folk, Sufi and contemporary dance. Over more than 27 years he has performed across the United States, United Kingdom, Sweden, China, Japan, India, Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore.
His journey began at the age of eleven under Ustad Hamid Hussain Shaad Jaipuri, a trailblazer of Pakistan’s Kathak scene, and continued under the legendary Ustad Shado Maharaj. He went on to complete three years of advanced training with Ustad Rajendra Gangani of the Jaipur gharana at the National School of Drama in India.
Where many Pakistani artists have built their careers abroad, Mohsin has chosen to stay, teach and build at home. He is the founder of Mohsin Babar Productions and the Kathak School of Performing Arts, the only institute in Karachi dedicated exclusively to Kathak.
Our
Team
Our team is a collective of dedicated dancers trained in Kathak and contemporary movement. Many come from underprivileged backgrounds and from families with no connection to dance, and train with us on full scholarships. They bring a hunger to learn and a sincerity to their movement that cannot be taught.
Mohsin Babar
Productions
Mohsin Babar Productions creates dance theatre and short thematic dance films rooted in Kathak and drawing on Sufi, contemporary and Pakistani folk traditions. Each production is built around original stories, music and choreography, and tours beyond the major cities to small towns and rural communities.
Alongside its stage work, the company produces community theatre that engages urgent social themes, using performance to open conversations that lectures and pamphlets cannot.
Kathak School of
Performing Arts
The Kathak School of Performing Arts offers structured, intensive training in Kathak grounded in classical tradition. It is the only institute in Karachi dedicated exclusively to Kathak.
Full scholarships are available for talented students, so that dedication, not background, defines opportunity.
